Keri Russell Is Ready for Her Second Act

Keri Russell may be best known as a former teen star idolized by millions of teens in the late 90's, but now she's back and breaking new ground in her new indie hit film, Waitress.

Russell faded from the Hollywood scene following the end of her hit television series, Felicity, in 2002. Having spent most of her young life in front of the cameras first in The New Mickey Mouse Club and later in Felicity, the actress was suffering from a severe case of burnout and needed a break from Hollywood. Now she's ready to return with a new husband, a baby on the way, and a hit new film with a tragic real-life backstory.

In the film, Russell portrays a pregnant waitress in a small Southern town who is try to save up enough money and courage to leave her abusive husband. With the help of some friends, an affair with her gynecologist, and a talent for making pies she finally finds her ticket out of her turbulent life.

Recently her former Felicity writer-director-producer J.J. Abrams interviewed the star about her new life, the film, and the upcoming arrival of their first child.

On burning out following Felicity:

"When Felicity was over, I moved to New York and just kind of acted like a kid for a year. I read books. I went out dancing. I got drunk. I walked home in the snow. Having time off just gave me perspective."

On have a life outside of her work:

"I think that now, because I'm a few years older, I just don't care as much about everything. When you're younger you want everyone to think you're so cool. That just doesn't matter to me as much anymore. I have this whole life outside of work."

On deciding to return to acting now:

"I just didn't know what I wanted to do. I was looking into colleges. I thought I might go back to school. I thought, I'll see if I can get into Sarah Lawrence. I'm interested in a lot of different things. I think there were a lot of things I could have done. But I didn't know that I wanted to work again until the right job came up."

On looking forward to becoming a mom herself:

"I've always known that I wanted to have kids, so it's not a hard idea for me. If anything, I'm surprised I even waited this long. I'd love to have more than one. But what I'm most excited about is just the idea of starting life."

On what she's doing in anticipation of becoming a parent:

"We just went to Bora Bora. We took this amazing trip together just because we said, 'Let's go this before --' not 'our life is over,' but you know. So we've been trying to do all these last-minute trips. And we've been reading. Not much else. It's been a really easy, natural process."

On if she'll let her kids act:

"Oh, Jesus. Not if they were a kid. No way. Look, I think I turned out okay. But, honestly, I think I'm the rare exception. Really, I just think that acting is a hard business. But that being said, the people who are great in this business are some of my favorite people in the world. They're interesting. They're emotional. They're very smart. I've met some great ones. But there's so much that comes with this business. Money and fame attracts so many different types of characters.

Apatow admits, "I called and asked, 'What about you really irritates your wife?' He admitted he never read the baby books when his wife was pregnant."

Another shared love for the two is their addiction to TiVo. He says, "I'm a total victim of technology. At a hotel if we miss something on TV, Jack says, 'Again!' to tell me to rewind like we do at home."

Hot Hollywood Dads and Their Kids

In honor of the upcoming Father's Day holiday, In Style is featuring a section on Hollywood dads and their children from photographer Joyce Ostin's new book on the subject. Here's the highlights and photos:

David Duchovny with Kyd and Madeleine

"David is truly a family man," says Ostin. "His life with wife Tea Leoni and their children seems loving and content... Both children showed their love for their daddy. They couldn't stop hugging and playing with David. I saw seriousness in David's eyes that made him all the more intriguing as a father as well as an actor."

Eric McCormack with Finnigan

"The terrifying responsibility of fatherhood is outweighed only by how much freakin' fun it can be," says McCormack.

Rod Stewart with Alastair

"It seems that my parenting skills have improved with experience," says Stewart. "I've learned that you've got to just let your children be who they are and celebrate their individuality."

Michael J. Fox with Sam, Aquinnah, Esme and Schuyler

"My dad was an old-fashioned, school-of-hard-knocks kind of guy. He grew up during the Depression, came of age during World War II, and then spent 25 years in the army," he says. "He was really a different kind of father, and person, than me. Tougher. But he was loyal, and family came first... Even though he thought actors were hippies and show business was another planet, he drove me to L.A. from Canada to find me an agent because that's who I was and what I wanted. I miss him."

Mekhi Phifer with Omikaye

"I witnessed some of the cutest moments I have ever seen in my life watching Mekhi and his son, Omikaye, together," says the photographer Ostin, "little expressions and feelings about his dad were uncanny. I will never forget that adorable little boy sitting in his daddy's lap smiling and feeling so proud. What a pair!"

Lionel Richie with Miles, Sofia, and Nicole

"Every time I have had the pleasure to interact with Lionel, he has been the most gracious gentleman," says Ostin. "His smile and voice are sure to put anyone at ease. His gentle way is the 'Lionel style.' His talent has never gotten in the way of his being a loving, sweet man and a caring father."

Laird Hamilton with Reece Viola

"This shoot was really memorable," says Ostin. "It was right after my mother-in-law, Evelyn, passed away. Laird was so spiritual and cosmic and open to listening to me talk about her. I knew this gorgeous, unbelievable athlete was truly a star with a huge heart. When he put his daughter in his hands, the look of love and fun he was having was striking."

Jim Belushi with Robert, Jamison and Jared

"Fatherhood is like beekeeping," says Belushi. "The honey is so sweet, but be careful of the sting."

Flea with Sunny

"Flea was on the road with the Read Hot Chili Peppers but [he] was home on the day I happened to call," says Ostin. "He told me to come over in 45 minutes... His baby was fast asleep. When she woke up, she was full of smiles. Her big blue eyes and sweet smile make her the perfect combination of mommy and daddy."

Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher with Scout, Tallulah, and Rumer Willis

"Thanks to Demi this shoot happened," says Ostin. "As she pointed out to me, the message in this photograph is a very important one. The more love you give children, the better. Even though their family may not be a traditional one, there is certainly not a lack of parenting or love."
