Water for Elephants star Reese Witherspoon covers the May 2011 issue of ELLE UK.  The newlywed mom-of-two opens up about making movies, motherhood, and making it all work together.


On the misconception that she has it all with new husband Jim Toth, daughter Ava, 11, and son Deacon, 7:

“There’s this fallacy that we can have it all. I get it often, ‘Oh, you have it all’ - and I don’t.  It’s hard. And there are times I take two years off and I don’t work. And there are times I go to work and I feel sick because I can’t see my kids for five days. And it’s real hard to go. Work is important to me. The kids are important to me. My relationship’s important to me. But all three can’t be functioning at 100% at all times."


On being a woman in Hollywood:
“I’m not going to lie, it’s fun to watch.  But at a certain point, I go, ‘Wait, strip it all down.’ These girls—I shouldn’t say girls, these women—worked really hard, really hard, and now it’s reduced to … ‘She looks frumpy.’... We’re just too hard on each other. Women need to be more supportive of each other, stop tearing each other apart. There’s plenty of room for all of us. There’s plenty of men for all of us. There’s plenty of jobs. There’s plenty of room! I really believe it. Another actress out there has a number-one movie? They’re going to make more movies about women. A female writer sells a script? They’re going to look at another script from another woman. The better one woman does, the better all women do.”

Gwen Stefani Admits To Being A Visually Vain Tomboy

On taking pride in her appearance: 

"I mean, I'm very vain.  That would be my middle name. Of course I am, you know what I mean? I love the visual."

On today's younger popstars (Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Rihanna):
"I don't see myself in those girls.  I usually put pants on. I see these girls as more going for the sex-symbol thing. I was more, in the band, like a tomboy. Of course, I think every girl is sexy, so there's going to be a little of that. But I see a lot of younger artists going more toward the sexy thing."

On her marriage to Gavin Rossdale:
"The first time we ever kissed was right around Valentine's Day; we were in New Orleans on tour.  I always think about that because it's unbelievable that we've been able to stay together. I feel so proud of us. It's one of my biggest achievements."

Cougar Town's Busy Philipps Talks Parenting

Cougar Town star Busy Philipps may play a bit of a wild child on the hit ABC sitcom, but in real life the actress has a more domesticated side with her daughter Birdie, , who turns 2 next month.

The actress is featured on the cover of the new issue of Mom magazine posing with her adorable little Birdie. In the accompanying article, this working mom opens up about her pregnancy, experiencing natural childbirth, and how motherhood has changed her.

On her pregnancy:
"I loved being pregnant—I really took to it. I was never sick and I gained 80 lbs, which I know is a lot. But I hiked and was active and did prenatal yoga and meditated every day - something that I haven’t done before or since."

On her birth experience:
“I wanted to have a natural childbirth since I was in high school—I remember watching a 20/20 about hypno-birthing and saying to my mom, 'That’s what I’m going to do with my daughter. I’m not going to have drugs.' I did ask for drugs, several times, but my husband and I had a deal: Anytime I asked for drugs, he said, 'OK, let’s just wait five minutes, and if you still want them in five minutes then we’ll get them for you.' So of course five minutes later I was on another whole journey, and I ended up not having any. And she was a huge kid! It took me three hours to push her out. They brought a mirror in for me so I could see. Toward the end—no joke—I had full-on hallucinations in between pushing. It was crazy! And as she came out, the doctor got her head and her shoulders out—there’s nothing like that pain in the whole world: It’s white hot. Then my doctor asked, 'Do you want to pull your daughter out?” So he took my hands and I pulled Birdie out and pulled her up to my chest.'"

On how motherhood has changed her:
“I had this idea that I was going to become a mother and then all of the career stuff was going to fall away and I wasn’t going to care about my job. But the truth is, I still care a lot and the two things are wholly separate. Being a mom doesn’t inform my work as much as I thought it would. It feels weird for me to even say that out loud. I always say to Birdie that I’m so lucky because I have two jobs that I love. The first job is being her mother and that’s the most important job. And my second job is also cool, because it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I hope she gets to have at least one job that she loves.”

"I’ve been craving a lot of red meat. I haven’t ­eaten red meat in 20 years, but I definitely have been eating it ­during this pregnancy. The baby must need it, so I’m going to give the baby what it wants."

"Not to be too graphic, but the hair growth! I’ve had to shave my legs every day. I didn’t realize it was ­going to be so drastic and so much. And all these little baby hairs on my stomach? Most of it is little fuzzy blond hairs, but every now and then I’ll get a black hair ­coming out of my belly button—that’s really pretty."

On her birth plan:
"I’m going to give a Girl Scout effort to ­hypno-birthing. I’m really excited about it. That’s my plan, but my husband and I are both very, very open to however the child is ­supposed to come out. Knock on wood it all goes well. I’m not one to judge any woman on how they choose to give birth. It’s individual and I think everyone’s different."

On her hopes for her baby:
"[I hope the baby is] long and lean (laughs). I dream about it because my husband is 6′4″. I also hope the baby has his artistic side. My husband’s an artist and painter, and he is so talented. I hope that comes through in our child. And I hope the child has my laid-back personality, because I think it will help us as parents (laughs) if the child’s not too high-maintenance and just loves life."

Jennifer Connelly is featured on the cover of the December 2008 issue of Marie Claire magazine to promote her new film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, which opens this month. The busy actress has two sons — Kai, 11, and Stellan, 5 — with her husband, actor Paul Bettany.

"I have a Bedazzler! The last time we whipped it out was for Stellan's birthday. I sewed capes for all the kids, and then they decorated them with fabric, paint, jewels, and buttons."

"I love that he's an American hero who is absolutely, 100 percent cowardly."
