Actress Katie Holmes, 27, gave birth to a baby girl earlier today at the home of fiancé Tom Cruise, 43. According to a statement issued by the couple’s publicist, the baby weighed 7 lbs 7 oz and was 20 inches in length, and both mother and daughter are doing well. The child will be named “Suri,” which means “princess” in Hebrew or “red rose” in Persian.
A source tells Us, “Tom has been calling all his friends all day like a maniac. He’s joking that he’s been jumping on couches all day long.” The source added that Cruise made it a point to keep the baby’s gender a secret, and that three weeks ago the actor was even referring to the baby as “he.” “He really is a good actor. He had us all thinking it was a boy.”
Holmes’ family was surprised and delighted by the news. “We knew they were having it sometime this month, but we had no idea today!” her uncle, Richard Holmes, tells Us. “That’s wonderful!”
Cruise has two adopted children, Connor, 11, and Isabella, 13, from his previous marriage to actress Nicole Kidman. Cruise proposed to Holmes on the top of the Eiffel Tower on June 17, 2005. He has said that they expect to marry either this summer or early fall.
There is no word on whether Cruise will be at tomorrow’s Mission: Impossible 3 junkets where he is scheduled to do publicity for the film, which hits theaters next month.
