When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon decided to stay out of the limelight and battle the disease in private. At the time the actress was starring in the play Rabbit Hole in New York City and went so far as to schedule her surgery for Sundays, so she wouldn't miss a single performance during her show's run.
She recalls, "I didn't want to make it public while I was going through it. I didn't want paparazzi at the hospital."
The diagnosis was no surprise for the actress who revealed that her own mother had also suffered from the disease.
She admits, "I always sort of thought I was going to get breast cancer. (That) there's a really good chance."
Nixon credits her partner Christine Marioni and her two children, Samantha, 12, and Charles, 5, with helping her through the traumatic experience.
She is currently serving as a spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, encouraging women to get tested and treat the disease while it's still in its early stages.
