Angelina Jolie Gets Criticism for Adoption Remarks

Angelina Jolie has received her own criticism following her remarks about Madonn'a recent adoption in Gala magazine.

A longtime advocate and adoptive mother of two, Jolie has faced her own adoptive scandles following her adoption of Maddox from Cambodia.

When she adopted Maddox in 2002, Jolie utilized Seattle International Adoptions, run by Lauryn Galindo. Galindo was found guilty two years later of visa fraud and money laundering related to Cambodian adoptions.

"Angelina is not a hero in the adoption community," Tatiana Beams, a Seattle-based international adoption advocate, told Page Six. "She adopted Maddox under a questionable agency, where the directors went to prison."

Beams says that after Jolie's high-profile adoption, Cambodia adoption was brought to a vitual stop and many families who were waiting to adopt children were left empty-handed.

  1. There was also conflict surrounding her adoption of Zahara, if I remember correctly. Wasn't the press claiming that the girl's mother or father was still alive and wanted her back? I seem to recall it was a situation similar to Madonna's. Anyway, I think she's been singled out because she's high profile. It's not like she's actually personally responsible for closing down the doors of adoption in Cambodia. So while I do think that she should follow that old proverb of not throwing stones when she lives in a glass house, too, I don't think it's fair to now attack her to sell a story!

Angelina was thoroughly investigated, and Maddox was really an orphan. And besides, I've been keeping track of Cambodian adoption for a long time, and families who were ACTUALLY IN THE PROCESS OF ADOPTING--not people who were "considering" it--GOT THEIR KID. It was just that no new applications were accepted.
