Angelina Jolie is talking for the first time about the start of her relationship with Brad Pitt. In the January issue of Vogue, she discloses that she had no intentions of interfering with his marriage to Jennifer Aniston and that she has no plans on marrying him. Jolis says the two realized that they shared a "deep, emotional bond" while filming "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" even though it was clear that Aniston was Pitt's best friend.
"I think we were both the last two people who were looking for a relationship," she says in the interview.
"Because of the film we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened."
Jolie says the two remained "very, very good friends" after wrapping up the film although she does not disclose the details of the period between the end of the film and the end of Pitt's marriage to Aniston in early 2005.
"And then life developed in a way where we could be together, and where it felt like something we would do, we should do," she said.
She disclosed that it was Maddox who ultimately decided to welcome Pitt into their family. One day, Maddox "just out of the blue called him Dad," says Jolie. "It was amazing. We were playing with cars on the floor of a hotel room, and we both heard it and didn't say anything and just looked at each other. So that was probably the most defining moment, when he decided that we would all be a family."
Jolie says the couple has no plan to marry, but are committed to raising their three children together.
"We've both been married before, so it's not marriage that necessarily kept some people together. We are legally bound to our children, not to each other, and I think that's the most important thing," said Jolie.
Jolie says she'd be willing to meet with Aniston, but "That would be her decision, and I would welcome it."
The actress admits she has settled down since having her children. "I'm committed to life. I think definitely before my son, I was a little nihilistic," said Jolie. "I'm starting to be able to see being 50 years old with the kids graduating from high school."
