Human Rights Group Trying to Stop Madonna's Adoption

The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), a grouping of 67 human rights NGOs in Malawi, is attempting to stop Madonna's adoption of a 13-month old baby boy for the moment.

The group wants to ensure that Malawi's laws "are not bent" for the 48-year-old singer.

"The laws of Malawi are clear that if one wants to adopt a child one has to stay with the child for at least 18 months for assessment," says their spokesman.

Only seven children have been adopted from Malawi by U.S. citizens in the last five years according to the State Department due to the country's stringent requirements.

"Madonna and her legal counsel have been working on her plans to adopt a baby from Malawi for quite some time. She had hoped to keep this very private and a family matter, but things didn't go that way," says the singer's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg. "I was not made aware of many of the chapters in this ongoing process. Hopefully Madonna and family will soon be reunited once everything goes through."

  1. It's nice she wants to adopt from a foreign country, it's not nice when the rules of adoption are bent for her and her alone. Where does that leave all the other good people who want to adopt but don't have the money/clout that she has? I know the child would have wonderful opportunities with her as a mother, but I can't help but be annoyed that she is able to skirt the laws.
