Lance Armstrong to Race Again – On Foot

Lance Armstrong may have retired from cycling after winning his seventh straight Tour de France last year, but that doesn't mean he's stopped competing.

The 34-year-old Texan plans to run in the Nov. 5 New York City Marathon – his first-ever marathon.

"I've been training some, but I wouldn't call it serious," Armstrong told the Associated Press on Wednesday. "It's just something to fill a void in my life after I quit competing as a professional cyclist."

Armstrong spoke to the AP from the current Tour de Georgia, a race he won in 2004. He is now part owner of the Discovery Channel team, and monitored the riders' progress by car alongside team manager Johan Bruyneel.

"I don't really miss competing as much as I thought I would," he said. "Being out there reminds me how much I enjoyed spending time with my teammates – the training part of it – but there's no doubt in my mind that I'm 100 percent retired."

New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg said in a statement on Thursday that learning of Armstrong's marathon plans was "a bit like winning the lottery."
