Cruise 'found baby's name in a book'

Tom Cruise says that he and fiancee Katie Holmes took just minutes to agree on the unusual baby name that has caused worldwide debate.

After daughter Suri was born last week they explained that her name had its origins in Hebrew, meaning “princess“, or in Persian, meaning “red rose“.

But others were quick to point out that it also meant “pickpocket” in Japanese, and the route by which it can actually be traced to the word meaning princess was so circuitous that bemused Israeli media discussed the issue at length.

Today Cruise, in Rome for the world premiere of his new film Mission Impossible: III, told Access Hollywood that he and Holmes had spotted the name from a book and fallen for it straight away.

“Friends of ours sent us these books and we thought, oh, it’ll be fun to look at it,” he said.

“It was (in) the second book that we looked at. All of a sudden, Suri! We looked at each other and went, ’Suri’, and that was it.

“Took a couple of minutes and that was it. That’s how I am, you know. It’s either right or it’s ’No’. Not a big story. On the floor. Found it. Bam! This is it.”

The actor said Holmes’ parents, Marty and Kathleen, were the first people the couple spoke to after the birth.

Cruise told a press conference, which he turned up at unexpectedly, that it was his own “mission impossible” to be there.

“I didn’t want to come,” the 43-year-old said.

“My daughter was just born and I didn’t want to leave her and her mother.”

He said he would only be in Italy for a few hours before getting flying back to Holmes and his new daughter.

But it was later revealed he would attend the London premiere tomorrow night as well.

Cruise also told fans in Rome that he changed his baby’s nappy all the time, and loved it.

He added that the couple had a system they had nicknamed “the B&B“. “She does the breast-feeding, and I do the burping,” he explained.

Suri was born last Tuesday and is 27-year-old Holmes’ first child.

Cruise has an adopted daughter and son from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.
