Kate Hudson Talks About Guys and Finding the Balance

Kate Hudson makes her return to the big screen in this week's new film, My Best Friend's Girl. She talks with Parade magazine about the movie and life as a single mom to 4-year-old son Ryder.

Some highlights from the interview:

On dating as a single mom:
"I got married at 21 and it lasted for seven years. I guess I’ve been in the dating game for like two-and-a-half years now. But I’ve only dated like three guys. It’s like you meet people, and you enjoy people, and they either work or they don’t. Then one day, you find the person that actually really works."

On what she is looking for in a guy:
"I’m not a very judgmental person. I don’t judge somebody before I meet them. I don’t have my checklist of what I expect from a guy. I think that would be very dangerous. I don’t know. I think I’d probably never meet anybody. You know, I kind of feel that it’s important to be open. I think ego is what ruins relationships, you know? So if I was to sort of start off with what I need from a guy I think I’d kind of be biting off my nose to spite my face, for lack of a better analogy."

On facing life after divorce:
"I think the toughest transition for me, after being married for so long, and being so connected to my husband, was living alone. Now I love living alone. But the transition to getting there had its ups and downs like loving it and then not liking it. But once you settle into it, it’s really nice. But Chris and I get along really well and we are both good parents."

On keeping her life balanced:
"Obviously, the easy answer is my son and my family. I’m fortunate that between movies I can just dedicate all of my time to my son. That makes it easier to take the days that I'm working 18 hours and feeling guilty about not being able to be home and be a mother. All in all, I think it’s a pretty good balance."

On Ryder:
"He loves to dance. He loves music. It’s in his blood. He’s really into rap music and hard rock. It’s so funny because while I like rap it’s not really what Chris and I would listen to around the house. But my kid just loves it. It makes him feel cool. I see his little face and all of a sudden he thinks he’s cool."
