Brooke Shields is hoping that her upcoming show, Lipstick Jungle, will help convince women that they shouldn't be afraid to want it all.
"It's about not apologizing for being able to be successful, and not apologizing for wanting as much as you can," the 42-year-old actress said at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
"If it's a family and a career, why not?" she added. "It may not be easy, but we don't have to apologize for at least wanting the most of what is available to us."
Shields was on hand at the lighting with her co-stars Kim Raver and Lindsay Price to announce that the NBC series will start airing at 10 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning Feb. 7.
Raver, a mom-of-two added, "It's also trying to figure out how to have that balance, and how to have the balance between the friendships and the husbands and the boyfriends and the family. It's what everyone is dealing with every day."

I'm a man but I agree with Brooke Shields on this. I think she is a terrific lady and and a feminist like I am. I know my mother who lived through an era where women were considered second-class citizens (they still haven't achieved fully equal status yet) and who sadly passed on a decade or so ago thought very highly of her as a human being and would be very proud of her comments. Thank you for posting them.
ReplyDeleteI'm a woman, but I have to disagree with Brooke Shields comment. In this year of 2009, I think it's still family and social pressures that cause women to think they should have it all. Ultimately, something or someone suffers. I'd prefer to spend my time and energy focusing on one thing, and doing it right. Secondly, we need to rethink the population issue. This number of humans on our planet is not sustainable. Less people equals more for each. To many people means more crime, less civility, and less jobs. If we continue at this rate, we are only hurting ourselves, our environment, and our planet. When will we have the realization to say: it has to stop? We have to set a limit and start taking care of the planet that takes care of us. If we're looking for an activity to keep us occupied, there are thousands of volunteer opportunities just waiting to be filled. Women don't have to have a child to feel worthwhile.
