Madonna and family are about to be evaluated by Malawi officials to determine if the adoption of her toddler son, David, will be formally completed. The singer and her husband Guy Ritchie are said to be "dreading" the visit next month by Malawi's head of child welfare services following the scrutiny the family received earlier this year.
Mr Kilembe, the official in question, said yesterday he is anxious to see if the incredible publicity surrounding the adoption has had any adverse psychological effect on the child. He went on to say that by no means was the adoption certain and that he would need to assess the family environment before making a final decision.
He told the Mail: "We are worried that the level of public interest might be bad for David. In the normal situation children don't have cameras in their face.
"We are not just looking at the positives of being adopted, one of the aspects of an assessment is looking at the negatives."
Mr Kilembe will spend up to five days at the family's London home.
He added: "I just want to make sure the child is happy and with a good family. I have met both Madonna and Guy Ritchie and they seem like nice people."
However, interest in the child has been intense. When he was brought to the UK, pictures of a nanny shielding his face from paparazzi lenses featured across the globe.
Mr Kilembe will advise the Malawian High Court, which is expected to make a decision after hearing evidence from all parties.
He explained: "Whatever is decided either way will be the decision of the High Court but they will act on my decision. If we are satisfied, then he (David) can stay."
