Ben Affleck was home in Boston to speak at a high school graduation ceremony. He also made stops at a weekend Red Sox game and spent some time volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank in Boston on Sunday as part of the America's Second Harvest campaign. The actor spent the day helping other volunteers sort food in their warehouse.Affleck says he become aware of the less fortunate residents of Boston while he filmed his full-length directional debut Gone Baby Gone there last year.
He says, "We did a lot of location scouting . . . and you knock on a lot of doors and you go into a lot of homes . . . and I saw the need. What I saw sort of surprised me. I saw a lot of working poor."
"I got to see a lot of Roxbury, Dorchester, and also Lowell - a lot of neighborhoods I wasn't that familiar with," said Ben.
He says he was "struck" during his location scouting"by how much of the city was struggling in the face of needing something to eat and really not being able to afford, on their salaries, the basic fundemental necessities."
[From Emma - I've done similiar volunteer work sorting and packing food every month since I was in college. Earlier this year my seven-year-old started joining me on the trips and it is an amazing experience for both of us. It's something little that anyone can do, that can make a big difference to one of your neighbor's lives. If you have a couple hours each month, I highly recommend checking with your local programs and donating a little bit of time to help out those in need.]
