Keri Russell has found a new role following the end of her Golden Globe winning series Felicity. She's winning rave reviews and a definite career boost thanks in part to her new film, Waitress.
In the film, Russell plays a working class Southern woman who reacts to the news that she is pregnant with a mix of comedy and resentment. She says of the role: "People expect all women to react the same to pregnancy. But anyone who's been around pregnant women knows that it's not all cutesy and sweet. You spaz out and you're angry and you have tantrums. There's a lot goin' on!"
Following the end of filming, Russell found life imitating art as she announce that she is expecting her first child with husband Shane Deary. The couple are as regular as possible in Hollywood and met when he asked if he could buy her a cup of coffee in Martha's Vineyard.
Despite being very pregnant, Russell finds the bulk of the press rounds for the movie resting on her shoulders. The writer / director of the film, Adrienne Shelly, was tragically murdered last November and a construction worker with whom she had a dispute has been charged with her death.
She says, "Here we are trying to do all this press. I'm so pregnant and we're lacking our ringleader. It still hasn't really sunk in. I keep thinking she'll come back from vacation and be like 'Can you believe it?' The movie's so great!"
During the interview, Russell finds herself needing to unbutton her jeans and give her growing belly a break, exclaiming: "Non-pregnancy pants are the worst!"
Russell tries to avoid all the industry parties and keep a low profile. She says that lifestyle is "just not for me. I like my normal life. And I like my privacy."
She even calls herself a nerd which considering she's spent 16 years in the industry, the worst anyone can say about her is that she once had to get a bad haircut on Felicity. She admits, "I'm just a nerd. I can't stay awake past 10 o'clock, which is usually when bad things happen."
As she gets ready to welcome her first child into her life, she admits that it may change her lifestyle somewhat and isn't quite sure who everything will shake out. She explains, "Shane and I are not the type to have a nanny. But I'm gonna have to get help if I work."
And it appears there is plenty of work lined up for her. Next up, we'll see her as a guest star on NBC's Scrubs followed by the films August Rush and The Girl in the Park which both come out later this year. Still she plans on taking a long maternity leave and hasn't decided when she'll return to work. Whenever she does, it looks like she'll take it all in stride.
