Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance Talk About Keeping their Marriage Strong

Keeping a marriage strong is difficult when you are dealing with everyday headaches, it gets even more difficult when you add the spotlight of Hollywood and the heartache of infertility to the mix.

On today's episode of Oprah, Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance talk abou how they have faced their trials head-on and found their soul mate.

The couple first met more than 24 year ago in graduate school at Yale University. Romance took the back burner as the two took seperate paths to Hollywood - his to Broadway, hers to Los Angeles.

The couple crossed paths again in 1994 when Angela agreed to go on a date with him. "Dare I say, it wasn't memorable," Angela says. "He just seemed like a really, really nice guy, which translated [to] 'kind of boring.'"

A second date at the driving range changed everything and the two married exactly one year later.

The couple gives credit of the strength of their belief in God and Angela even had "GOD" inscribed on her wedding band between her and Courtney's initials. "I can only rely on his strength," Angela says. "I'll attempt to see [Courtney] even in those moments that aren't perfect, perhaps in a small way, the way God sees him."

The couple faced difficulty conceiving a baby and turned to turned to fertility specialists for help. After seven years of visiting in vitro specialists, getting shots and other treatments, the news was not encouraging.

Angela remained optimistic. "I wanted it, but I couldn't hold onto it so that I was devastated when it didn't happen," she says. "I had to remain hopeful and resilient and, 'Okay, let's do it again.'"

The couple's path to parenthood was changed after a conversion Angela had with a friend who was utilizing a surrogate. The couple discussed the option and decided to take a leap of faith.

She says, "The more we learned about it, the more we began to think that perhaps this was an answer for us," Angela says.

Today the couple are the proud parents of twins Bronwyn Golden and Slater Josiah.
