January has not been one of Angelina Jolie's best months in the press. This month she has been raked through the internet coals for referring to her daughter as a "blob, criticized Madonna’s adoption of a baby boy from Malawi, been reported as "difficult" about St. John's designs by Women's Wear Daily, and came across as aloof at last weeks Golden Globes.
Today, The New York Times analyzes her recent behavior and the imact it is having on her image. The breaking point seems to have occurred at the Globes when she was openly hostile to interviewer Ryan Seacrest. The video of his interview or lack there of during the awards show has been broadcast everywhere including TMZ and Youtube.
The Times is foreseeing a backlash that has been present but calmly resting under the water since her divorce from Billy Bob Thornton. She has become quite the family focused mom and even whethered Pitt's divorce from Jennifer Aniston without much damage to her persona.
Angelina opened the doors to much of the critism with her recent interview with Vogue Magazine. When talking about her relationship with Pitt she claims that they were “very, very good friends” for a long time. Saying of Aniston, “It was clear he was with his best friend.”
The second the Vogue inteview hit the presses came reports that Jolie was “a nightmare” during the Vogue photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz.
The backlash isn’t really all her fault, many of her quotes have been taken out of context and blown up to epic proporations. The blob quote was actually generated by the interviewer when Jolie was at a loss for words to describe her daughter. The reporter suggested the word blob. Jolie responded: “Yes, a blob! But now she’s starting to have a personality.”
The Madonna comments were aimed at adoption in Malawi and other African nations rather than aimed directly at Madonna - although the did have an air of superiority. Part of the problem is that she has been too busy making news, rather than making movies and is now having to answer for herself rather than Hollywood chit chat.
It will be a matter time to see if she can reintegrate herself back into the public's good graces as she has done in the past.

Maybe she should stop doing interviews for a while, since she tends to make controversial statements or people perceive her statements as controversial.
ReplyDeleteI find her disingenuous, hypocritical, self-righteous, and only marginally intelligent. She deserves any backlash because she said what she said and inserted her opinions and attitude on a national stage. What else does she expect? I've never cared for her and would actually be amused by her downfall.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand her. I'm not buying the whole "Saint Angelina" act. And with recent comments made in the press, it seems the carefully crafted facade is starting to crack.
