When I saw the reports last month that Madonna was planning to adopt an African orphan, I filed it away in my "whatever" folder right next to the report that Jessica Simpson was getting ready to adopt last spring.
It seems I may have been wrong in doubting the report as Madonna and her entourage arrived in Malawi on Wednesday to reportedly adopt a child and establish a fund for an orphan center for 1,000 children.
"She came straight from the plane, greeted the minister (of women and development) in the VIP lounge, then (went) straight to her car," said Adrina Michiela, a government spokeswoman.
Madonna has said that she will spend at least $3 million on programs to support orphans in Malawi which has been hard hit by the AIDS epidemic and another $1 million to help fund a documentary about the plight of children in the country.
As for the adoption, the Malawi government has confirmed that they are helping to find a child and will offer her exemption from a ban on non-resident adoptions.
