Britney's Legal Woes

Britney Spears hasn't released a new song for a couple of months, but that's not keeping the pop tart from being in heavy rotation--at least among the legal set.

The songwriters behind Spears' 2005 opus "Do Somethin'" have filed suit against a South Korean pop composer, alleging he ripped them off.

Universal Music Publishing Korea, the company that handles overseas rights to Mrs. Federline's musical gems, says that the team behind "Do Somethin'" (the track is credited to frequent Spears collaborators C. Karlsson, P. Winnberg and H. Jonback, along with A. Hunte) believes the tune was "partially plagiarized" by a single called "Get Ya" from the popular South Korean singer Lee Hyo-lee.

Spears released her ditty in November 2004 as one of the few new tracks to appear on her Greatest Hits: My Prerogative album; it was released as a single in February 2005 and peaked at 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "Get Ya," the first single off Lee's second album, was released just last month.

The legal action targets "Get Ya" songwriter Kim Do-hyun. Kim reportedly has admitted being influenced by the Britney song, but has denied the allegations that he copied directly from it.

Spears wasn't directly named as a plaintiff in the suit, although it makes frequent reference to her.

Likewise, the "Toxic" singer isn't named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by three former employees (bodyguards), but a trio of her companies are.

There was no comment from the Spears camp Wednesday on either of the Brit-centric legal actions.

Christy Turlington Talks about her New Son

For some reason, Christy Turlington has been keeping quiet about the arrival of her second child, who made his debut back in February. It hasn't been in the news at all. Perhaps she's trying to get back into pre-baby shape before she's back in the headlines? Who knows...

Anyway, iVillage interviewed the supermodel-turned-designer -- who also has a daughter Grace with her filmmaker husband Edward Burns -- for an upcoming Mother's Day story and she opened up about the little fella, who they named Finn. Here's a snippet:

"Grace loves being a big sister. She had been waiting nine months to see who was inside my belly... and now she has him!"

Christy, who married Ed in 2003, is still designing a line of yoga clothes for Puma called Nuala.

Courtney Sells Nirvana Rights Share

When Nirvana singer and lead songwriter Kurt Cobain died in 1994, his widow, rocker Courtney Love, became the primary beneficiary of his estate, which includes more than ninety-eight percent of the band's publishing rights. Band members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl were left with part of the remainder. Now Love tells Rolling Stone that she has finally sold twenty-five percent of her share of Nirvana's sought-after publishing catalog -- to Larry Mestel of Primary Wave Music Publishing, former COO/GM of Virgin Records.

"I took on a strategic partner, Larry Mestel, to help me co-manage the estate because it was overwhelming," Love explains. "The affairs of Nirvana are so massive and so huge, and they've all fallen on my lap. I own almost all of [the publishing], . . . and it proved to be too much for me. I needed a partner to take Kurt Cobain's songs and bring them into the future and into the next generation. And this guy's the guy to do it."

Mestel says his three-month-old company, Primary Wave, is thrilled to have bought into an American musical legacy. "The appeal to me is that [Kurt was] one of the most important songwriters of his time," Mestel says. "Kurt was an incredible songwriter, and Courtney is an exceptionally talented person herself. So I felt the combination of Courtney's creativity and the things I can add can really help in creating more value for these copyrights."

Though Love and Mestel declined to comment on specifics, a source close to the deal tells Rolling Stone that Mestel has likely paid in excess of $50 million for the rights.

Exactly what the partnership will mean for the life of Nirvana's music -- including the Nineties hits "Come As You Are" and "All Apologies" -- is unclear. Thus far, the tracks have been notably absent from corporate ad campaigns and blockbuster action-movie soundtracks. The new partners are already eager to curb speculation that any of the generation-defining songs might end up in, say, a deodorant ad.

"We're going to remain very tasteful, and we're going to [retain] the spirit of Nirvana and take Nirvana places it's never been before," says Love. "My goal is to keep the music very true to who the songwriter was and what his passions and tastes would be," Mestel adds, "and to work through Courtney to figure out exactly the best way to go about exposing his music to a new youth culture to a new generation."

In other news, Love says she has entered into another partnership -- a musical one, with New York-based electronic artist Moby. According to Love, Moby has agreed to co-produce the follow-up to her 2004 effort, America's Sweetheart, which Linda Perry is also at work on. The two met up when Love was in New York last week, and ended up spending a night out with Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys and Michael Stipe.

"A long time ago, Moby was Christian, and I had this fantasy I was Mary Magdalene and he was Jesus. I've always had a little crush on him," says Love. "And I trust him. I'll talk all sort of shit, and he'll keep trying to focus me back on the music."

Second Gyneth Drinking Spotting

After yesterday’s item that pregnant Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted downing Guinness with dinner on Tuesday, a reader tells me: “I sat next to her and Chris Martin at Lupa on Thompson Street [Wednesday] night; she had two or three glasses of wine in the time that I was there, and I left when they were partway through the main course.”

While Guinness contains iron that can be good for a pregnancy, drinking wine when you’re five months along is a tad more controversial.

Gwyneth and Chris were looking very much in love at a corner table in the back room of the popular SoHo restaurant, run by Mario Batali.

Continues the spy: “She looked gorgeous as usual, with the pregnant ‘glow.’ Her face did look large though, which, according to my superstitious Italian friend who was with me, means she is having a girl, since face changes during pregnancy mean a female child.”

Gwyneth's Sushi Faux Pas

Gwyneth is known for her rigid diet and vigorous yoga practice which is why patrons of a New York restaurant were shocked to see her enjoy a beer at dinner recently. The pregnant actress had a Guinness with her husband, Chris Martin at dinner which happened to be at a sushi bar. NY Daily News reports:

…. the stares turned to gapes when the pregnant actress downed a beer.

“People were looking and waving, and she just tried to melt further into the corner,” according to one witness, who said she ordered salad and what appeared to be sushi.

Diners in the 30-seat restaurant observed Martin exit the BYOB joint to pick up several bottles of the Irish stout Guinness at a nearby deli. And they were surprised when Paltrow, who is five months pregnant with the couple’s second child, drank one herself.

Paltrow is famous for her rigorous macrobiotic diet, although she altered it the last time she was pregnant, with her daughter, Apple. Some experts recommend a little Guinness for expecting mothers, because of the brew’s high iron content.

Her rep confirmed she drank the alcoholic beverage, but said she ate only cooked food, not sushi.

Britney Goes for Laughs on Will & Grace

Britney Spears made her much-publicized appearance on Will & Grace Thursday night, spouting dialogue that may surprise her fans.

In the storyline, Out TV, the network on which series regular Sean Hayes, as Jack McFarland, hosts his talk show Jack Talk, has been bought by a right-wing conglomerate and some changes are to be made, including Jack's being given a cohost, "to widen the audience."

Enter Britney, all smiles and blonde hair in a flaming red dress. "Hi," she announces in an exaggerated Southern drawl, "I'm Amber Louise, from the great state of Alabama."

Amber ambushes Jack Talk, unfurling the Stars 'n' Stripes in front of the Rainbow Flag on the show's set. Once Jack balks that he will not compromise his principles, Amber corners and advises him.

"Jack, you're making a huge mistake," she says. "If you want to get to the top, you got to compromise, like me."

When Jack asks what she's compromised, Amber responds: "Okay, I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. I'm not who you think I am. My real name is Peg, and I'm a hardcore lesbian."

Wait, there's more. Amber rattles off all the things she's into, including "leather play." She adds, “Whatever you got, I'll eat it, snort it or ride it, baby."

As Jack gasps, Amber continues, "Look, go along with this, and it'll work for you. Look at me: I clear $165 a week, I moved out of my storage unit and I'm on TV. I'm the freakin' dream!"

But Jack doesn't buy into the dream. At the fade-out, Amber occupies Jack's desk as he clutches it to pull Amber toward the door – as Will (Eric McCormack) yanks Jack off the premises.

Ahead for the real-life Britney: next month, her third fragrance, In Control, goes on sale, while in November she is scheduled to release a new album.

Hurley wishes she had had kids with Grant

Elizabeth Hurley wishes she had had children with ex-lover Hugh Grant, so her four-year-old son Damian could grow up with siblings.

Despite splitting with Grant in 2000, the actress - now dating Arun Nayar - claims the pair now accept they should have had children together.

She says: "Hugh and I now joke that we should have had eight children in the 1980s and 1990s, but it wasn't the right time."

Hurley is also frustrated she hasn't been able to give Damian - the result of a brief relationship with movie producer Steve Bing - any younger brothers or sisters. Although she insists she would like to have children with Nayar in the future.

She adds: "There's no doubt in my mind though that Damian would have been much better off it he'd had a couple of brothers and sisters by now.

"I didn't really understand that until recently and I wasn't in a position to have more children straightaway anyway - I don't think my relationship with Arun was established enough at that time."
