Britney Celebrates Mardi Gras

Louisiana native Britney Spears went home to enjoy Mardi Gras – and to cheer up four students whose lives were severely affected by Hurricane Katrina six months ago.

Talking to Good Morning America from the French Quarter Tuesday while St. Catherine of Siena School dancers surrounded her, Spears recalled her "surprise" meeting with the kids from Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans.

"It was an honor to be here with all of them," Spears said.

Kentwood-raised Britney showed up to meet the students while they were having breakfast with City Councilman Jay Batt and discussing Katrina. Her arrival was met with squeals of delight.

"It was awesome. I will never forget it," said 14-year-old Lindsay Hernandez, who lived with 21 relatives and friends after her home was destroyed. Another student, Auntrell Prosper, 17, who now lives with her family in a trailer, said of the hurricane's aftermath, "We had to go to a shelter."

Spears took the girls shopping and then dining at one of Cajun chef Emeril Lagasse's restaurants for some fried chicken and red beans and rice, the Associated Press reports.

Spears, 24, also gave the girls fleur-de-lis pins on blue ribbons, and she surprised the school's dance troupe, the Gatorettes, and brought them gift bags with CDs, DVDs and shoes sent by Capezio.

"They dance so great. They're awesome," Spears said after watching the troupe rehearse.

Drew Lachey Wins Dancing With the Stars -- and Discloses He and Lea are Expecting a Baby Girl

Drew Lachey and his professional dancer-partner Cheryl Burke leaped their way to victory Sunday night on the second-season finale of ABC's Dancing with the Stars.

The former 98 Degrees pop singer and brother of Nick Lachey, 29, out-hoofed the favorite, pro wrestler Stacy Keibler, as well as NFL great Jerry Rice, as Lachey and Burke wowed the crowd with his freestyle routine to "Hound Dog." For the finish, he vaulted over his partner's shoulders.

"This jump is either gonna make us or kill us," Burke said beforehand.

The couple earned a total score of 27 (out of a perfect 30) from the three-judge panel. Combined with their score from Thursday's pre-finale, this gave them a total of 87 out of 90. Viewers' votes counted for half the decision.

"From week one, you come out on this floor like Wyatt Earp at the OK Corral," judge Len Goodman told Lachey.

Said Lachey, whose wife Lea is due to have the couple's first baby, a daughter, momentarily, and whose older brother Nick helped cheer him to victory: "I'm the luckiest man in the world right now."

In surprise news halfway through the two-hour finale, host Tom Bergeron announced that viewer response eliminated the leggy, blond Keibler and her partner, Tony Dovolani, from the competition. They had held a strong second-place position among the judges with 86 points.

During the program, all seven of the previously rejected celebrity contestants – ESPN sportscaster Kenny Mayne, actress Tatum O'Neal, news personality Giselle Fernandez, rap star Master P, actress Tia Carrere, tanned ladies' man George Hamilton and talk-show host Lisa Rinna – returned for a final dance with their partners.
