Help me pick a car!!!!

As many of our regular readers may recall, my garage was totalled by a night of nasty storms and straight line winds back in June. The insurance company has FINALLY decided to total my Explorer.

I have researched replacement SUVs until my head is spinning. So fellow SUV drivers, please let me know if there is a model that you personally love or loath.

Keep in mind: 1) I live in Minnesota so snow and ice is a major issue 2) I have growing boys that play football / baseball / hockey so I need some cargo space 3) no minivans

Right now the frontrunners are a Jeep Liberty and a Ford Escape. Leave a comment, drop me an email, any guidance would be appreciated.

Update on the rest of the storm damage:

The old garage has been removed completely as of last week and we are down to an empty concrete block. The new garage should start going up this week (cross your fingers).

Our dog stepped on a nail in the backyard from the demo earlier today and I spent two hours at the Vet emergency room (she's fine, but now refuses to go outside without me).

The boys find the stump where the tree once stood to be the perfect play area for their adventures.

  1. We test drove the Escape and it was just too cramped for us. And our kids are young!! I've been in the Liberty and I like it, a lot. Toyota Highlanders are great, too. And I really like the Santa Fe- it's larger than it looks!!

    Good luck!!

Please don't buy an SUV. It's not fair to dump all that pollution on the rest of us, not to mention your kids and the world they'll inherit from you. Subaru, Volvo, Volkswagen all make more fuel efficient 4 wheel drive vehicles, I'm sure others do to. Please prove to us you're not a greedy, selfish, suburban consumerist who's unconcerned about the rest of the world (which is what your SUV says you are.)

  3. Dear Anonymous,

Gee thanks for your misplaced tirade! Please go place your sanctimonious statements elsewhere.

I do more than my part to make this a better, cleaner world for my children. I prefer to support American brands as my father worked for the iron ore industry for more than 40 years.

I don't preach my personal values, but choose to live an environmentally conscious lifestyle that fits the needs of my family.

  4. Stella,

Thanks for your feedback! That was my impression of the Escape when we test drove one too. My boys are on the tall side so I'm concerned we'll outgrow it too quickly.

I loved my Explorer so maybe we go back to looking at a full-size SUV.

Hi there, I have heard only good things about the 2010 Chevy Equinox. It's best in it's class for fuel economy (32 highway mpg), which compares to the Ford Escape hybrid, and has more cargo space. If If I could afford one, it would get it in a second! Here is a great article:

It wasn't a tirade, it was a plea. Please, please, PLEASE buy a fuel efficient car. Now is your chance to exercise your decision to "live an environmentally conscious lifestyle" by driving the most fuel efficient 4 wheel drive you can find.
